    Extra carriages for South West Trains rail services

    Extra carriages will be introduced on trains serving London and the South West, the government has announced. The Department for Transport (DfT) said South West Trains services from London Waterloo would get the first of 60 additional carriages in May 2013. Waterloo International Station will also be reopened for commuter services. Services from Windsor, Weybridge, Portsmouth, Southampton, Eastleigh, Reading, Hounslow and Alton into Waterloo will be lengthened. Additional services will also run from Reading, the DfT said.     More needs to be done to improve the reading skills of pupils in Reading, according to a local head teacher. It comes after figures released by the Department for Education showed one in five 11-year-olds in the town were unable to read at the expected level.     Two teenagers have been found guilty of taking part in a raid on a wholesalers in Reading. About 40 people raided Makro, stealing £15,000 of goods, as riots engulfed several towns and cities in England. Conall Bascombe-McCarthy, 19, was convicted of violent disorder and burglary. A boy, 17, was convicted of disorder, but cleared of burglary. Marc Murray, 30, was cleared of violent disorder and burglary at the trial at Reading Crown Court.     Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision in Caversham which happened earlier today (22/12). The incident happened in Prospect Street, at the junction with Peppard Road and Henley Road, at around 11.55am.     A new bridge could be built in Reading as part of the council’s multi-million pound bid to get people using more green forms of transport. Plans for the pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the River Thames is part of the council’s £31.8m proposals. There are three main routes over the Thames in the area, two in Caversham, Reading and one in Sonning, Wokingham.
