The chief executive of Reading Borough Council is to leave as part of the authority’s plans to save about £1m.
Michael Coughlin said he was in talks with the council about the timing of his departure.
The authority wants to combine the posts of chief executive and director of resources.
It has already lost one senior manager after combining the responsibility for education, social services and housing into one directorate.
The latest proposals will go before the full council for agreement in January.
Council Leader Jo Lovelock said: “We made it clear back in June that we wanted to review the senior management structure of the council to reflect the fact that the organisation is becoming smaller with fewer people to manage.”
Mr Coughlin said he would make a further announcement about the plan in the new year.
