    Tri a Triathlon this May

    Henley Sprint and Tri a Triathlon are back for a fourth year, at Shiplake College, on Sunday 27th May.
    For the more advanced, the Sprint, consists of a 400 metre swim, a 28 kilometre cycle and a 5 kilometre run. For beginners the Tri a Triathlon consists of a 300 metre swim, a 14.5 kilometre cycle and 3.2 kilometre run.

    ‘The Voice’ at Magoos

    Last night View TV Henley went to Magoos, in Hart Street, where former contestant from BBC’s The Voice, John James Newman, was performing.
    John James impressed the coaches on the show with his version of Pack Up and Don’t Worry, Be Happy and  joined Team Danny.
    However, he went out in the battle rounds after going up against fellow team member David Julien.

    Olly Murs is performing at the Henley Festival this year on Sunday 8th July and two lucky pairs of festival goers are being offered the chance to meet him.

    Blue confirmed to play Henley Festival

    Blue have been confirmed to play at this year’s Henley Festival. The boy band will perform on the Saturday night, as well as LuLu and the London Community Gospel Choir.
    Lee Ryan, who lives in Henley, along with his fellow band members Duncan James, Simon Webbe and Antony Costa originally formed the pop band in 2000, releasing debut single ‘All Rise’ in 2001, before splitting in 2005, and reforming in 2009 to represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest

    The Olympic torch will be making a 70 day journey across the UK, visiting 1,000 cities, towns and villages.
    On the morning of the 10th July it will arrive in Henley and will end the day in Reading, where a free evening celebration is being held at the Madejski Stadium.

    Preparations begin for Henley Regatta

    The Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since. It has become one of the best known Regattas in the world, attracting thousands of visitors over a 5 day period, to watch over 200 races.
    Preparations have already begun for this year’s Regatta which will be taking place from the 27th June to the 1st July, as the tents start to go up for the enclosures alongside the world famous Leander Club.

    The Henley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society are holding a May Day fun run on Monday 7th May.
    The 5 mile run, which begins at 11am, will start and finish at Temple Island Meadows.
    Entry fee for adults is £8 in advance or £10 on the day. For children aged 10 to 15 it is £4 in advance or £5 on the day and under 10’s are free.

    Mike Hurst and the Springfields come to Henley!

    Mike Hurst and the Springfields will be performing in Henley this Saturday night.
    Mike Hurst is one third of the original Springfield vocal group, alongside Dusty and Tom Springfield. The group enjoyed international success and were the first British vocal group to have a Top 20 American chart hit in 1962.

    This year’s May Fair is being held on Monday 7th May at Mill Meadows. The fair will open at 12pm with live music, entertainment and activities all afternoon till 5pm.
    New this year is a May Queen and King children’s fancy dress competition and the children’s baking competition, with prizes in 4 categories for best big cake, biscuits, tray bake and cupcakes.

    The King is back in Henley!

    The Mayor of Henley, Pam Phillips, is holding an evening with Elvis to raise money for charity.
    On Friday 4th May from 8pm Elvis tribute act, Ben Portsmouth will be performing at the town hall.
    Tickets are £20 and the proceeds from the evening will go to the mayor’s three charities, Nomad, Henley Youth Centre and CAB.

    Local charity, The Face of Henley, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. To raise awareness of the Charity and additional funds for worthy causes, they have teamed up with local photographers, Janet Hanton and Claire Smith, for a special portrait project entitled 100 Faces of Henley.

    The Queens’s Diamond Jubilee Lunch

    To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Henley Town Council and The Henley Partnership are organising a lunch for 60 nominated guests who are over 80 years old.
    The event will take place on Sunday 3rd June in Falaise Square, from 12.00pm until 2.30pm.

    Queen to attend Jubilee Party in Henley

    The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are to meet residents from Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire at a garden party and river pageant to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
    4000 guests will attend the party which will be held on 25th June near Henley, a significant proportion of whom will be selected by a public ballot in May.
    Residents who are successful in the ballot will join representatives of voluntary organisations and charities, together with civic, community and business leaders.

    The Henley International Film Festival is taking place this month from the 27th to the 29th April, with the theme of food.

    Olympic Torchbearers Revealed

    From the 19th May the Olympic Flame will be carried by 8,000 inspirational people as it journeys across the UK, visiting more than 1000 cities, towns and villages, over 70 days.
    Potential torchbearers were nominated through programmes run by Locog and sponsors Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung in 2011. They aimed to recognise and reward people with a story of personal achievement and or contribution to the local community.

    A new interactive exhibition, that documents the history of British Olympic rowing, will be running at the River and Rowing museum from the 31st March to the 30th September.
    Visitors to the exhibition, The Perfect Rower – 100 years of racing for glory, will be able to see artefacts from the two previous London Olympics, in 1908 and 1948, and the impact rowing made at each Games.
